Since 2001, the Government has proposed the introduction of a medical revalidation which is now imminent; as of Autumn 2009 doctors must be able to demonstrate that they remain up to date and fit to practise (www.gmc-uk.org).
The methods of revalidation have been outlined in the 'Trust, Assurance and Safety' white paper, written by the Secretary of State for Health in 2007.
